Language and Accent
How do I forget this so very important topic about London?!
Language and accent were such a curious thing in London. The accent obviously make it sound like the most distinguished country on Earth but when the whole society is so consistent with calling what Americans call the bathroom a toilet, the accent loses a bit of charm.
Hands down, my favorite phrase to come from London is 'Cheers.' Things I loved about it were: 1) it was used so effortlessly in conversation 2) the way it sounded for them to say it with the accent and knowing they weren't referring to drinking (or were they?) 3) it was something we (as Americans) could also use without being frowned upon and 4) it's just flat-out awesome! I am realistic about the use of the term. Though I would love to bring that phrase back to the States in my normal conversation, I know that my pseudo-week there does not really justify its use by me. For those I know who lived there in excess of a month, I feel they are fully justified in using it.
Sure there were other fun phrases, but that was by far my favorite in its use.
That's all for now. I'll update some of the other posts and this one with interesting pictures from Saturday in London.
I'll start with this one...
Look kids, Parliament, Big Ben
